The discovery of exoplanets has transformed our understanding of the universe. Thousands of planets now orbit stars beyond our solar system. You might wonder how are exoplanets named. NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), launched in 2018, scans the entire sky. TESS designations begin with TOI, short for TESS Objects of Interest. A planet like TOI-700 d orbits the star TOI-700. TESS has identified many planets around bright, nearby stars, making them ideal for follow-up study.

HD (Henry Draper Catalog)

The Henry Draper Catalog is a historical catalog of stellar spectra. Stars are labeled HD followed by a number (e.g., HD 209458). The planet HD 209458 b, discovered in 1999, was the first exoplanet found to transit its star. This detection allowed astronomers to measure the planet's atmosphere.

WASP (Wide Angle Search for Planets)

The WASP consortium uses ground-based telescopes to find transiting planets. WASP stars are designated WASP followed by a number (e.g., WASP-1).   • Dimidium (Latin for "half") is the proper name for 51 Pegasi b. The name reflects the planet's mass, which is about half that of Jupiter.
  • The star Helvetios is the proper name for 51 Pegasi, assigned through the NameExoWorlds campaign. Its planet 51 Pegasi b received the proper name Dimidium.

Other notable proper names:

  • Poltergeist and Phobetor for the planets PSR B1257+12 b and c (around a pulsar).
  • Lalande for the planet formerly known as GJ 436 b was assigned through a NameExoWorlds process, though the exact status of some of these names may require verification with IAU records.

How Citizen Science Naming Campaigns Work

Citizen science naming campaigns are organized by the IAU and its partners. These campaigns follow a structured process:
